Understanding
the intricacies of hypnosis

Our approach

Our laboratory aims to study the mechanistic diversity of hypnotic phenomena within a basic research approach. Ou view is heavily influenced by sociocognitive approaches of hypnosis, with a key interest in interactional aspects of this phenomenon and their cognitive consequences. Overall, our aim is to explain hypnosis in terms of atypical patterns of simpler cognitive skills.

Three aspects contribute to our singularity:

> A strong technical know-how in support of acquiring high-quality data, to ensure the robustness and replicability of our results.

> We also adopt an interventional approach (as opposed to an observational approach). In our view, hypnosis not simply a natural phenomenon, but as a human activity. Consequently, we investigate which interventions are most effective in producing hypnotic phenomena.

> Lastly, our theories are substantiated by mathematical models that allow for unambiguous and falsifiable hypotheses. In turn, controlled experiments provide robust and generalizable causal relationships that help us contribute meaningfully to the knowledge on hypnosis.
